Finger Lakes Health is home to the Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing (MSWSPN), which offers an LPN certificate. We are one of only three hospital-based nursing programs in New York State. Founded in 1956, we have graduated over 1,800 nurses.

Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing (MSWSPN) offers a program that is conducive to the learner seeking a career as a license practical nurse. Students attend during the day, Monday – Friday for ten months. This 1080 clock hour program will lead to a Certificate of Practical Nursing.

Students in the program attend classes and start participating in clinical rotations in the first semester. This allows for immediate application of knowledge and skills obtained in the classroom and laboratory by caring for actual patients. Observational experiences may be conducted in long term care, medical surgical and a ventilator unit.

Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC), one of our educational partners, provides general education courses at both the Geneva and Canandaigua campuses. Full time matriculated students have the option of taking general education course through FLCC.

After graduation from MSWSPN students find our college level curriculum prepares them thoroughly to continue their education, including becoming RNs through our MSWSPN/FLCON (1+1) program.

We have knowledgeable and caring faculty and professional staff.  The School faculty and staff embody the Finger Lakes Health organizational values of:

Health
Exceptional care and service
Acts of kindness
Responsibility and respect
Teamwork

The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing has a distinguished reputation throughout the Finger Lakes Region for the quality of our graduates. We focus on preparing students to join a workforce community of healthcare professionals who provide exemplary service and care to a diverse population. Our faculty and staff are innovative, creative and engaged in advancing the knowledge and skills to improve the delivery of health care.

Students are attracted to the program of study because of small classroom size, faculty to student ratios, and flexibility of the programs. Applicants can apply via this website.
